The importance of safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth

Utilizing therapy as a place to process & explore yourself and your identity

Identity
Understanding your identity and sexuality is an ongoing process. However, having a safe space to explore your feelings can make that process feel easier and less isolating.
Identity exploration doesn't always happen in a vacuum. It can be complicated, it can impact relationships, school, family dynamics and it's something that can be difficult to process alone. This is especially true for minority identities, as it can be very common for those who identify as LGBTQIA+ to face discrimination in school or at work or even by family or friends.
These experiences can have a significant impact on your mental health and overall wellbeing. Although exploring your identity can be deeply personal, the environment around you can play an important role in how supported you feel throughout that process. Having people and places where you feel accepted, heard, and respected can provide valuable support during
this process.
Why affirming safe spaces matter:
Coming out as queer or trans to family or friends can feel overwhelming at first especially if you're unsure how they will react. Experiencing discrimination for identifying as LGBTQIA+ can be a pretty common shared experience, especially in institutions like schools. And with family and friends not being accepting. Having a safe space to process everything that comes along with understanding your identity and sexuality can be helpful for your mental health.
There are many factors that can make a space feel safe, such as being able to openly communicate without fear of being judged and having your identity respected. Being heard is also deeply important and can show up in many ways, such as using the right pronouns and being respectful towards the way you express yourself. When navigating identity and sexuality and dealing with issues like discrimination, being in a space that has these factors in place can
make it easier to discuss concerns that arise and receive the support that you need.
Therapy as an affirming space
Finding safe and affirming spaces can sometimes be difficult. One way to access a safe and affirming space is through therapy. Therapy is a collaborative process, ideally it is a space where you can be open and honest without feeling the need to change who you are.
Therapy can be a space for you to process the difficult things that come along with being LGBTQIA+ or questioning your identity. This can look many ways but may include discussing how you feel about yourself, how identity has impacted relationships with family and friends, experiences you may have facing forms of discrimination, and the thoughts and emotions that
arise when working through all of this.
Finding an affirming therapist
Finding an affirming therapist, one that has knowledge and background on LGBTQ+ issues can be an important step in this process. Therapy should work for you, not the other way around. A therapist with knowledge on LGBTQ+issues may be better suited to meet your support needs than a therapist without any background knowledge. When searching for a therapist that's the right fit for you this can be something that's important to keep in mind.
Once you find the right fit, therapy can help you develop a variety of tools to strengthen your mental health and understand your identity, relationships and family dynamics.
Some of these tools include:
Emotional awareness
Coping skills
Communication
Self Compassion
Problem solving
Identity exploration
Support building
When it might be time to seek therapy
Therapy is not only for people in crisis, and it can be beneficial in any stage of life dealing with many different concerns including ones about your identity. However it may be worth seeking support if things start impacting work or school or your relationships with your family for friends. Affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+ folks are so deeply important and therapy can be one of those spaces.
